outsiders, subs, the notebook, the wiz, plus alicia keys live to spotlight her smash hit hell's kitchen starting monday. on today. right now at 6:00. more than just cheers for the graduates. protesters disrupt the uc berkeley commencement calling for a ceasefire in gaza. plus, wow, look at that. a powerful space storm painting the sky with northern lights. there's a chance. a chance you could see the spectacle again tonight. but first, the san francisco man targeted by racist harassment. twice tonight, his neighborhood rallying around him to stand against. hate. the news at six starts right now. thanks for joining us. i'm gia vang and i'm terry mcsweeney. united against hate. people gathered in san francisco to support a man and his family targeted in two racist incidents so far, they involve packages with vile racial slurs and threats
6:01 pm
received at their home. neighbors are standing by terry williams and say they're working to make the neighborhood free from hate. nbc bay area's christie smith explains. thank you, everyone for showing up a little nervous, terry williams grateful for the community members who gathered for a rally at alamo square today. that's why i'm speaking up now. hopefully more people will speak up. recently, two packages arrived at williams home nearby. one of them included a doll with a noose telling him to leave the neighborhood and racial slurs so bad we can't show them. the second one is even worse. like more pictures of me, we're going to eradicate you. you don't belong here. you're fine. you're fine with. we're here because we love terry. and we will not tolerate racism or crimes here in our district, williams is a lifelong resident and well known as a dog walker. neighbors organize this gathering to stand in solidarity with williams and raise awareness. i think this is amazing. you know, this incident is so ugly and at the same time,
6:02 pm
look at what it brings out. it brings out love. so that's a beautiful thing. the painted ladies were the backdrop for colorful signs of support and solidarity. we must see that we are all members of the human family. the rally also aimed to raise funds for a comprehensive security system near the williams home, and help install security systems in the neighborhood. police are investigating the incidents, and video appears to show a suspect hiding under a hood and mask. i've been checking in with the chief. i know they're actively investigating it. meantime, the turnout today reaffirmed a neighborhood effort to stick together. people rally up, rallying against hate, racism in the neighborhood because it's real. so this is i'm happy that everybody can come out to support me. it spreads awareness. and maybe we can, like, defeat what's going on around in our neighborhood in san francisco. christie smith, nbc, bay area news. not just the person to get caught, a celebration turned pro west student protests. demonstrators use today's graduation ceremony

at uc berkeley to speak out about the ongoing war between israel and hamas. and i don't mean adding an 8 a.m. to your schedule. we are truly drum majors for social. all right, come on now. this is video from the university's live feed of the ceremony. and you heard those pro-palestinian protesters chanting in the background as the student body president started giving her speech. and then, as you saw, a member of the administration steps in saying they are being heard, but asked them to give the student body president respect while she speaks. video shared on social media shows some of the protests up close. you can see some students chanting from the stands while others walk into the stadium. the university says protesters left the stadium voluntarily and no rest were made. uc berkeley released a statement about the demonstrations that said, in part, while today's commencement was at times unfortunately disrupted, it did not prevent us from honoring the hard work and
6:04 pm
accomplishments of our students. university of san francisco students rallied at welch field, calling for the school to divest any israeli ties. the rally follows a heated meeting with the usf president on thursday. students say president paul fitzgerald did not meet their demands and agree to address a genocide in gaza, students claim. the president said the university does not have ties with israel, but the students disagree, citing a school program that offers a trip to israel. earlier this week, usf said in a statement university leadership is committed to finding a peaceful path forward, adding they plan to have another meeting with students soon and over in san jose city and santa clara county, leaders gathered for an annual raising of the palestinian culture and heritage flag. community members shared this video right here with us. the event honors the palestinian community and their contributions to the south bay. during the ceremony, county supervisor otto lee spoke out against the war in gaza when shooting down 300 missiles from iran, raining down on israel.
6:05 pm
that's defending israel, but restricting humanity, foreign aid, including food, medicine and even water to seniors, women and children, is not defending israel. this event, by the way, has been held for more than 20 years overseas. israel has issued an urgent warning to palestinians and parts of rafah to evacuate. the new orders, advise palestinians to head to shelters in a designated humanitarian zone. this video showing israeli troops on the border of rafah, here and this is in southern gaza, and black smoke, as you can see, rising over the city. israel has already sent some tanks into rafah for months. it has warned it will launch a ground assault there to destroy what is left of hamas. this is in retaliation for the october 7th attacks in israel. the invasion is raising international condemnations because of israel's refusal to outline detailed protections for civilians. if you stayed up late and had the right viewpoint, you might have seen this. quite the

reward. a rare sight in northern california thanks to a solar storm. check out this time lapse taken by photographer brian fulda. he posted this on his instagram page showing the northern lights over blue canyon. that's up in placer county right off of 80. there people all over the country got to enjoy this sight. the best views away from city lights. that doesn't mean you couldn't see it from the bay area, because you definitely could. these photos were taken by meteorologist rob mayeda in danville. see the colorful lights above the houses there and here to verify that is rob himself to talk about that happened. i was shocked, you know it's fantastic for northern california. it's good if you could see a little bit of red on the horizon. but to see all the colors associated with the aurora that was pretty unique this far south. typically you might find this in alaska or canada, but with the aurora set up as far south as it was last night, the upper energy particles reacting off the earth's atmosphere, the molecules up there, the oxygen and nitrogen molecules higher
6:07 pm
up. you get those red colors above 200km. then as you drop down to 100km and lower blue, green and pink showing up, those are the colors we usually don't see because the aurora is too far to the north. but that was not the case last night, and we might have one more chance, i think after midnight tonight. but things are shaping up for now. a bit more quiet. the levels have dropped off during the day right now. too low for us to see any aurora viewing, but the space weather prediction center expects the next wave, another pulse of energy moving away from the sun to react if the earth's upper atmosphere after midnight tonight, which could bring that viewing line back into parts of northern california and perhaps closer to the bay area late tonight. but you might be fighting the weather. look at that. we've got some low clouds spreading across the bay. best viewing inland areas and hilltop locations east of san jose. and those hills around the north bay. we're beginning to see cooldown too, with those low clouds leading to a bit of a change up for the wrap up of your weekend forecast . cooler changes ahead, we'll talk more about what you can expect in your sunday forecast
6:08 pm
and the hour by hour viewing forecast for the aurora tonight, coming up in about ten minutes. we want to hear that, rob. thank you very much. well, new at six. oakland's annual art and soul festival is off, at least for now. organizers made the announcement on social media. they say they were forced to cancel the 22nd annual event because of a delay in funding from the city. now, the event was going to be held this fall. the group says it won't return until next year, and that's only if they can collect enough money. by that time. we reached out to the city and council members for comment have not heard back. well, here we go again. another closure for highway 37 in the north bay. caltrans is doing repaving work this weekend between vallejo and sears point. crews are repaving the eastbound side of the highway first. caltrans says it is on track to reopen by 5 a.m. monday morning. westbound 37 is open this weekend, but next weekend it will be closed for repaving while the eastbound direction will remain open. well, a grim discovery at a san jose animal shelter. the san

jose animal care center says the body of a contractor was found at the facility yesterday. it's not yet clear how the person died, and so far doesn't appear to be a violent death. police are investigating it as a so-called unintended unattended death. the shelter was closed yesterday but is back open today. the shelter says no animals were involved and it is sending heartfelt condolences to the family. tomorrow afternoon, glide memorial church is going to be packed to celebrate the life and legacy of the late reverend cecil williams, the longtime leader of san francisco's glide memorial church died last month at the age of 94. he was known as a champion of racial equality, lgbtq rights and the poor. reverend amos brown is one of the speakers at tomorrow's public memorial. he says what williams built at glide will ask far beyond his remarkable lifetime. for 60 years, cecil williams was a quintessential. example of true servanthood. the

6:13 pm
because of what this means to the fabric of what makes san francisco so special. we've been through challenging times, but we don't throw up our hands. we roll up our sleeves and we move forward and we make magic happen. several other parks have opened on yerba buena island near panoramic park, and they include signal point, the rocks dog park and buckeye grove. what a view. yeah, a big honor for betty reid soskin at cal state east bay today. during its commencement, the university conferred an honorary doctorate of humane humane letters to the 102 year old soskin who has led a most remarkable life. soskin graduated from oakland high school and worked as a file clerk during world war two at the richmond shipyards, and afterwards she became active in the civil rights movement. she is perhaps best known for her work as a u.s. park ranger at the rosie the riveter world war two home front national historical park in richmond. two years ago, she finally retired

at the age of 100. it is a great privilege to have an opportunity to recognize and honor the excellence and extraordinary achievement of individuals in significant areas of human endeavor within which are embodied the objectives and the ideals of the california state university, such a person is here with us today. wow i like it. soskin received her award to the wild screams of graduates. you can kind of hear them right now. they gave her a standing ovation. wow, congratulations to you back to more pictures from the northern lights. this picture went viral on reddit. it was taken in hollister hollister. people person who posted it lives in san jose but traveled a bit further south. get a clearer view of the lights. let's take a look at some more here. taken by a viewer at a beach in mendocino county. wow man, you used to have to travel a long ways to get things like this. you see the purple yellow green skies
6:15 pm
above the ocean there. great shots. she was posting that last night. i was just it looks like alaska. you know, you were opposed to that. you're not sure you're going to get any sleep last night? i know you want to see it. that was the thing. and it's a big difference what we had last night in the way i think tonight is going to go. those energy levels have dropped off quite a bit. so hopefully you did have a chance last night to get that view. something we really haven't seen at least the last 20 years. we might have a chance tonight, though. there's a couple factors that might limit the viewing at least. to start, you're looking at one right there near san francisco. as the fog rolls in. look at the temperatures today. it's like we jumped out of extended winter into summer upper 80s today in concord. average highs should be in the 70s inland, but san francisco right on the mark. mid 60s with the all day sea breeze and low clouds. a little bit of mist on the camera lens, now 64 degrees, wind out of the west at 18mph. still hanging on to the 80s in walnut creek and close to it in san jose. 79 degrees as we see the clear skies and still those 80 degree temperatures
6:16 pm
inland. overall, though, the inner bay especially beginning to see a cooldown as the sea breeze gets stronger, we'll see more low clouds surging inland tonight, which will lead to a slight cooling trend to wrap up the weekend. but those are like your summer microclimates. if those low to mid 60s and san francisco and 70s to upper 80s inland, and there's a look at the low clouds right now approaching san francisco for your aurora viewing tonight, see the areas out of the low clouds initially around san jose, the east foothills, diablo range, north bay looking pretty good. then later in the night those clouds will start to fill in as we head towards tomorrow morning. even some of the inland valleys of the east bay may see some low clouds to start. then back into the sunshine moving forward into the afternoon. so morning temperatures will be in the mid to upper 50s. cloudy start clearing skies inland. comfortable temperatures for your sunday. pretty close to where we were today, but a little bit cooler as you get closer to the coast in oakland. san francisco 65 degrees 73 in oakland, 83 in san jose, and probably the coolest day of the week. but not really cool at
6:17 pm
all. we're still near 80 in san jose, but we'll begin to see more low clouds, a bit of cooling for san francisco and oakland. low 80s inland as we head into tuesday. numbers start to rebound again as high pressure builds back. that's another midweek warm up close to 90 degrees in vacaville. again, you can see san jose low to mid 80s. you may be closer to 70 around san francisco. this will be the window of opportunity for the warmest temperatures of the week wednesday into thursday. and right now that extended weather forecast keeps things dry as we head towards next weekend. so watching those low clouds and drizzle around san francisco for any potential aurora viewing tonight, which we expect to pick up after midnight for a brief time. the coast and inner bay not so good. we're going to see more low clouds as we head towards tomorrow morning. inland locations a bit better with the visibility and rebounding temperatures approaching midweek, so stay tuned. you're going to have to be patient tonight. i think things might be a little bit quiet before midnight. we'll see if they pick up. thanks to aurora, twitter and social media
